Glass art inside the Empire State Building: Colossus of Rhodes To commemorate their heroic defense against attacking Macedonians and as a warning to future invaders, the Rhodians erected this awe- ionspiring image of Helios, the sun-god, in the harbor of the Greek island of Rhodes about 280 B.C. Cast of bronze melted from the war machines left behind by the defeated Macedonians, the great statue towered to an overall height of 160 feet. It was toppled by an earthquake in 224 B.C., and was later cut up and sold for scrap. |
